Immigration Issues
Once the student has received the immigration document in his or her home country, he or she will sign it, agreeing to abide by the US immigration regulations for that particular visa category. The student then uses it to apply for the visa at the US consulate abroad. If approved, the student uses the visa and immigration document to enter the US within 30 days of the first day of classes. Once the student has arrived in Portland, he or she checks in with the International Student and Scholar Services Office and ISSS creates a file for the individual. The student goes through mandatory orientation where he or she will learn in detail about immigration regulations and benefits. The student will also receive assistance with cultural and academic counseling and course registration during orientation. International Student and Scholar Services is required to report student attendance and visa status maintenance to the Department of Homeland Security via the national SEVIS database. Students are responsible for maintaining and monitoring their own visa status, which means completing a full courseload each term, maintaining valid immigration documents, working only with special authorization from our office or the Citizenship and Immigration Services and traveling only with ISSS authorization. We advise students on maintaining their visa status and applying for benefits such as employment and travel authorization. It is absolutely vital that students maintain their visa status in order to continue studying and working in the US. For more information on F-1 or J-1 regulations please refer the individual visa sections of this site. Upon admission to Portland State University
a potential international student provides the institution with the
equivalent of financing for at least one year of tuition and living
expenses. PSU then issues an immigration document which allows the student
to apply for either an F-1 or J-1 visa, depending on the individual
case. Most international students come to PSU using an I-20 document
and enter in F-1 visa status. Students participating in established
short-term exchange programs and scholars come into the US with a DS2019
document and enter in J-1 visa status.
