International Scholarships and Opportunities

D. Paul Fansler Memorial Scholarship

Number of Awards: 1 or 2

Amount: $1,000 each

Criteria: Awarded to senior-level and graduate students in Political Science and International Studies with high promise of achievement in international affairs.

Renewable: Annually

International Cultural Service Program

Number of Awards: Varies

Amount: The scholarship amount is approximately half of non-resident tuition.

Criteria: Intended to help international students in meeting costs to attend United States schools. Students accepted into this program receive a partial waiver of their tuition. In return, participating students provide a minimum of 80 hours of cultural service in the community during each academic year they are in the program. Students must be at least two terms of university coursework in the United States. Students restricted to ESL coursework are not eligible. Students must maintain legal non-immigrant status (F-1 or J-1 visas only)

Date: Fall term applications due July 15, winter due October 15; and spring due February 15.

International Student Scholarships

Number of Awards: $1,000 per term

Criteria: Students must meet all admissions standards, including the TOEFL requirement, and must have a minimum 3.00 GPA on all previous academic work. Outstanding academic performance will be recognized. Students should have clearly defined degree program. Students must maintain legal non-immigrant status (F-1 or J-1 visas only.)

Gary and Patricia Leiser Scholarship

Number of Awards:

Amount of Award: $500 Scholarship for study of Middle East Languages

Application deadline: Please Check

Criteria for Selection: - Undergraduate student at PSU. - Enrollment in Arabic, Turkish, or Persian Language. - Overall GPA 3.25. - US citizen. - Demonstrated interest in Middle East (through coursework)

Submit: - Completed application form. - Essay of 250 words maximum. - Letter of recommendation from advisor or professor. - Copies of unofficial transcripts

Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program at Portland State University

The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program prepares undergraduates for graduate study through involvement in research and scholarly activities. The purpose of the McNair Program is to assist in the academic and professional development of undergraduates whose goals are to continue their education to the graduate and doctoral level. In order to help students achieve their goal, the program sponsors and supports experiences that lay the foundation for a successful graduate school experience. By fostering mentoring relationships, promoting undergraduate research, assisting with GRE preparation, and encouraging students to attend and present at conferences, our goal is to produce highly competitive graduate and doctoral applicants who have the skills and experiences necessary to succeed in their programs.

As a McNair Scholar, you will receive the following benefits:

  • The academic and personal support of the McNair Program staff
  • A research summer stipend to complete an original research project
  • Publication in the McNair Scholars Journal
  • Faculty, graduate student, and peer mentoring
  • Opportunities to participate in research conferences
  • Funding to travel to research conferences and visit graduate schools
  • Workshops on the graduate school application process, financial aid, scholarships and fellowships, the culture of graduate school, and summer research internships
